Break Time! 7 Unique Staycation Ideas this National Day

National Day is coming and for many of us that means it is a chance to make use of the potential long holiday (hint: remember to request leave for 8 August and you’ll have 4 days of long holiday!). Some have already gotten your passport renewed, and given that so many destinations overseas are open for tourists in the midst of the pandemic, you guys will probably be taking this opportunity to catch a breather outside of Singapore. Yet, for some (like myself) who procrastinated or didn’t really find a need to get our passport renewed given how the queue at ICA gets insanely long, we can also make full use of our long holiday in this vibrant city of ours.

Staycation has been a very popular holiday option for Singaporeans, and with the pandemic keeping some popular tourist destinations closed to international tourists, it has been the top choice for most of us who wants to experience being away on a holiday again. While major hotels like Raffles, Fullerton, Marina Bay Sands, and Pan Pacific, etc remain on the dreams of every average Singaporean, but sometimes the price is a big deterring factor. And most of the time, these hotels come with a premium price tag that deters many of us.

Here is a list of 7 very unique hotels that you can consider for your next staycation!

1. Lloyd’s Inn

Minimalist Zen: Time to take a break from life and experience full zen here. (🥫.)

One of my favourite boutique hotels and my first choice if I were to plan any staycation. The minimalism provides guests with a sense of zen and tranquillity. It is definitely suitable for when you are trying to escape the noisy and stressful cosmopolitan environment. While the facilities provided at Lloyd’s Inn are kind of basic, the white, minimalistic design definitely stole the heart of many.

2. M Social

Loft it here: Not many hotels offer a double-storey room. (🥫.)

A brand that is not a stranger to many here in Singapore. M Social boasts a list of influencers whom have made one of their room a photoshoot playground. Located in the neighbourhood hosting several big names in the hospitality business, M Social provides a more affordable option especially for youths like us. Its Loft rooms also provide a double-storey experience that is not commonly available in most hotels.

3. YOTEL Singapore

Yolo much: Staying in Orchard, but on a budget. (🥫.)

Located right smack in the famed shopping district of Orchard, YOTEL Orchard is one of the two properties owned by the brand in Singapore (other being YOTELAIR Changi Airport). With the price ranges between SGD100-SGD150, it is a relatively affordable staycation idea to consider. Given its prime location, the price is definitely a steal! One of the key features of the hotel is that it provides automated check-in so that you can check-in by yourself! (Perfect for introverts like me haha)

4. Hotel Fort Canning

Vacation on a hill: Experience a bit of the colonial history from the hill where Sir Stamford Raffles resided. (🥫.)

The colonial facade tells the history of Singapore on its own. Located right on top of Fort Canning Hill, a tranquil neighbourhood overseeing the ever-so-buzzing CBD, Hotel Fort Canning occupies the original building that once housed the British Far East Command HQ and the Japanese forces. For those who fancy a colonial living experience, the Premium rooms are attached with a lounge/work area which was converted from a veranda. Even if you decided to work-cation (though I wouldn’t recommend all in the name of work-life balance) at the hotel, you will be treated to a nice view of greenery. There are also 3 swimming pools for guests to enjoy, so there’s no such thing as overcrowding here.

5. W Sentosa

To the other side: Travelling out of the mainland can be considered as travelling ‘over-sea’ right? (🥫.)

The most atas hotel in this list, and the only one that is located away from the main island of Singapore. Located right in the vicinity of many prestigious oceanfront villas, W Sentosa has one of the best scenic views you can ever get in Singapore. Imagine waking up to the ocean view in the morning, it is like having a vacation in the Maldives, but right at your doorstep. You can even chill at one of Singapore’s largest resort outdoor pool in the evening while watching the beautiful hotel being lit up in vibrant colours.

6. Duxton Reserve Singapore, Autograph Collection

Well Preserved: Staying in the facade representing the past of Singapore (🥫.)

Another hotel which occupies a property with a bit of history. The Duxton Reserve Singapore is housed in a restored 19th century shophouse. The overall feel you will get from this property is its elegance due to the black, white and a hint of gold colour scheme and the incorperation of timeless furnitures. While the Hotel Fort Canning gave a very premium colonial look, the Duxton Reserve appears to provide guests with a sense of how living in an old shophouse during pre-independent Singapore is like.

Modern x Oriental: AMOY makes you feel like living in ancient China, but with a modern twist. (🥫.)

Continuing with our list of hotels providing a new lease of life for the, the AMOY Hotel is located right at the corner of Chinatown. It features a very oriental yet posh design. While it does not consist of the usual facilities that other hotels house such as the gym and pool, yet it does houses an in-house restaurant. Furthermore, for those who appreciates the ‘East meets West’ cultural integration will love how each room are designed in a way that incorperates the elements of the eastern culture (like the porcelain sink) and the more western colour scheme.

Ultrasound Facial Treatment with IDS

Birthday month means there is an extra reason for self-care. While I always mentioned that birthday doesn’t really make a difference to me, but apparently I tend to pamper myself (sometimes to the extent that I question if it’s too much haha) during this month.

Following up with my skincare journey with IDS, and knowing that they also provide many other treatments, I decided to book myself the ultrasound facial treatment. So, before I carry on with the rest of my journaling, let me briefly explain what ultrasound facial treatment is and how ultrasound can help your skin.

Ultrasound has been a popular skin tightening treatment among those who have anti-ageing concerns such as loose and saggy skin, as it generates a thermal effect to help lift and tighten any skin laxity on our face and neck. It is definitely helpful if you are experiencing mild saggy of the neck and chin, or even wrinkles (I know you guys are damn concerned when you see wrinkles start to appear on your face, I mean after all your mask only cover the bottom part of your face but not enough to cover the wrinkles on appearing around your eyes 😢). For those who aren’t really keen on going under the knife to get your skin tightened, then ultrasound treatment is a proven best alternative.

Ok, this part’s going to sound like a full-fledged research paper, so feel free to skip if you aren’t very interested in the science part of things. But of course, I do enjoy learning about the processes of how things work so that I know what to expect and how beneficial such a process is for me. So here a snippet from IDS’s website (with some minor editing by me to make it slightly clearer):

Ultrasound therapy delivers sound waves about 5mm deep under the skin, penetrating into the papillary dermis as well as SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) layer of facial muscles under the fat, gently heating the dermis. Once the cells in the targeted area reach a certain temperature (briefly reaching greater than 60°C), they will experience cellular damage, and this triggers the dermis to begin producing new collagen. This essentially creates a thermal effect thereby causing a controlled micro-injury which stimulates the body’s natural healing and repair mechanisms to speed up collagen production (a protein that offers structure to the skin). With fresh new collagen, saggy skin then appears firmer and tighter, and there are lesser wrinkles. As the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site below the skin’s surface, there’s no fear of damage to the upper layers of the skin and the surrounding tissue.

Alright, enough of the very technical parts and it’s time to share my first ultrasound treatment experience!

So firstly, since the therapy involves the delivery of sound waves penetrating 5mm deep into the skin to heat the papillary dermis, means there is bound to be some pain and, to some, an unbearable level of discomfort. Thus, in order to greatly reduce any pain one might encounter, a layer of numbing cream was applied after a round of facial cleansing.

MINIMISING DISCOMFORT: Application of numbing cream

In order for the numbing cream to take effect, it will require a 40-minute waiting time before we get into the real action. Transparent foils were wrapped on my face to ensure the maximum effectiveness of the numbing cream.

WAITING: Ensuring that the numbing creams take effect before we start the treatment.

Once 40 minutes is up, I was then ushered into the treatment room. Markings were made on my face so that the treatment can be more targeted at places that require more attention. I definitely am more interested to see how my eyebags can be tightened after the treatment.

MARKINGS: To ensure a more targeted treatment.

I was told to lay back down and the treatment started, with the ultrasound handpiece being placed on my face. The handpiece was just being brought around like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. While it felt smooth (partially also due to the gel used during the course of treatment), I also felt some tingling sensation. The discomfort got a little unbearable when my left cheek was under the treatment. But then again, I am the least accurate person to give anyone a rough gauge of pain level. I am just… inaccurate. Oopsie.

It took about 30-45 minutes for the entire treatment to be completed. I didn’t really take note of the time taken because I was just so comfortable lying on the treatment bed (apart from that unbearable moment). Everyone’s condition is different so the time needed for each individual will vary as well. As a rule of thumb, the treatment will take about 30 to 90 minutes, so if you are going for ultrasound treatment, I would recommend not to squeeze it in your lunch break, unless you are working from home and no one actually bothers about what you are actually doing remotely.

There is no downtime to the treatment so basically after this, I could proceed to head down to Tangs or Isetan to do my window shopping. Oh, did I say I was trying out the ajitama egg recipe I found online? Ok this is a little random. I shall share more about it in my next update (I guess?)

For those of you who are more concerned about whether the effect is immediate, I would say that unless you really took a before and after photo immediately prior and after the treatment, you won’t really be able to see the difference. Of course, there are people who do experience that obvious change — especially if your collagen reproduction rate is faster than the refresh rate of the ASUS ROG Swift 360Hz monitor. But for many, it will take about 2-3 months to see the best results and more improvement after 6 months. I’ll probably check back in before Chinese New Year (eh can we take off our mask by then?). Really can’t wait to see the improvement (oh especially my eyelids and my going-to-be saggy chin).

So here’s my experience of my first ultrasound treatment with IDS, I shall update you guys with more of my facial journey!

Laser Treatment with IDS

Laser Treatment with IDS and My Skincare Journey Updates!

(This is a part of my ongoing skincare journey with IDS! You can read up on the first two instalments of the series here and here.)

4 months of Summer’s break, and it’s time to return back to school. I took a look at my iCalendar schedule — ever so hectic — and there was one I particularly scheduled in, and that was my date with IDS!

It has been about 3 months since my last visit to IDS, so I felt that it’s about time to find some time to indulge in some self-care, and also to top-up my skincare products. It was also a good time because I was forced out finally going to be out of my man’s cave and thus, I have to ensure that my face is in its best optimal state before I summon my inner socialble self in time for school.

IDS recommended me that I could do Mosaic laser, to help with the rejuvenation of my skin. Once we were done with the discussion, I was ushered to another room so that a beauty consultant can prepare my skin for the treatment.

The Thing About Laser

Before I proceed on to describe the process, let me elaborate on what a laser treatment is and what benefits do Mosaic laser bring about.

The Mosaic laser is a fractional erbium glass laser. It is able to deliver tiny columns of laser into the skin at spaced intervals. These columns of skin get coagulated by the heat from the laser and heal with production of collagen. This remodelling tightens the skin and smoothens the acne scars on the face, as well as rejuvenation of the skin on face and neck. It also helps to shrink pores and reduce wrinkles, roughness, discolouration, and pigmentation, giving a tighten and even skin tone.

I was told that it would be normal for my face to turn red after the treatment, and it will take about a week for the redness to fade off.

Beauty consultant at IDS applying numbling cream on Eddy Chua's face in preparation for the pico-laser treatment.

So back to the preparation for the treatment, the beauty consultant helped to apply some numbling cream to my face. Well, it is laser after all, the heat might make one feels uncomfortable at some point in time, so it will be better to get some numbling cream on and create some anesthetical effect to lessen any discomfort.

I laid there for a good 20 minutes to allow the numbling cream to take effect before she washed it off from my face. I can say that my face felt slightly numb, just slightly, maybe it is too numb for me to even realise it.

Eddy Chua excitedly and patiently waiting for his turn to do his laser treatment.

Thereafter, I was taken out to the waiting room. Once we are all ready, I was ushered to the treatment room for the Mosaic laser treatment.

Eddy Chua undergoing pico-laser treatment by Dr. Benjamin Yim of IDS.

I could roughly see the red laser from the machine being shone on my face. This was the time at which I realised the importance of the numbling cream. I could feel a bit of the burning sensation but it was not very much of a discomfort.

I was just enjoying my time lying right there while the treatment was conducted on me. Within 5 minutes, the entire treatment is completed. Fast game, I like.

“And we are done.”
“Oh? Wa, fast. Thanks.”

Once done, I went out to get the skincare product that I was supposed to replenish. I like how IDS products can last me more than one academic semester, so that I need not keep replenish my stocks. All you need is just a little pump on your pump for each of the product and it is adequate already!

^ That’s just me feeling so excited about having to replenish my Skincare products.

Eddy Chua looking satisfied with his IDS skincare product replenishment.

^ So precious lorh!

Eddy Chua seems to be very amazed with the range of skincare products which IDS offers at the clinic.

IDS also has a lot of different kinds of products for different skin types and conditions. If you also want to smooth and *blink* *blink* face like me, do hit them up and book your consultation with them!

My Journey with IDS Thus Far

It has been a great 9 months since starting out on my skincare journey with IDS, and I would like to say that there hasn’t been any period in the 25 years of my existence when my face looks so flawless.

For those who have long known me, they would know that I do spend part of my monthly budget on skincare products, even prior to my encounter with IDS. That’s why I have at least some guage on what I would like to have at the end of the day with the kind of skincare products offered to me. And I can safely say that IDS has been ticking the positive boxes on my personal checklist.

Ok there’s always acne outbreak here and there because of indulging into too much spicy food, but I am thankful that I have the companion of the Spot Control (SC) — my favourite product out of the entire series.

Different skincare products offered by IDS

Nine months into all the consultations with IDS, treatments and skincare products, I have experienced the combination of professionalism, great customer services, as well as quality skincare products. I have been enjoying all my visits to IDS and also, pleased to be seeing myself everyday in the mirror like some narcassistic psychopath, that my skin condition really have seen some improvement over the months.

Hopefully, with the improvement of my skin and my new style (like what you seen above), I will get to become more presentable in the upcoming AY?

My latest series Ed’s Filmologue Take 2 (半糖去冰) has commenced. I would like to invite everyone to subscribe to my channel so you can get the latest notification on my next video!

My Journey with IDS (Part 2): Trying out the Hydro-Therapeutics Treatment

(This is a follow up of my ongoing skincare journey with IDS! You can read up on the first instalment of the series here.)

I must admit I am a lazy person. Maybe that’s also the reason most guys give ourselves when it comes to facial care. As you’ve read from my previous post, there are quite a number of products that were prescribed to me for my journey towards a flawless and perfect facial skin.

While the adrenaline of receiving new products kicked in almost as instantly as the night following my first visit, I told myself to go slow. I took some time to get used to the product, understand how they work, and, most importantly, how they affect my skin. It took me a couple of weeks to get very used to my morning and night facial routines. Not to mention that due to the fact that I frequently change where I am based, I always have to carry a carrier full of products in my travel pack.

About one month later, right before Recess Week, I returned to the IDS outlet at the International Building for the second part of my treatment.

This follow-up visit has two main objectives: first to undergo this facial treatment called Hydro-Therapeutics Treatment (HTT) and secondly, to see Dr. Ben again so that he can also help monitor my progress.

Hydro-Therapeutics Treatment (HTT)

HTT is a facial treatment created by the very professional team at IDS for all skin types. During this process, accumulated dirt and clogged sebum will be removed from the skin and hence, resulting it being returned to a clean slate.

As a guy who wears make-up occasionally, I am also aware that makeup and products tend to build upon the skin and might cause some skin troubles as a result. So such treatment comes in handy too to help with the deep cleansing of my skin. And especially with my skin condition in a bad shape after rushing against time to complete my assignments on time and study for my tests, it’s really time for my skin to enjoy some rest.

The entire HTT process last 60mins, under the precision and care of my beauty consultant. The procedure includes:

1. Double Cleansing
2. Microdermabrasion (MDX)
3. Ultrasonic cleansing
4. Extractions of Blackheads
5. Ultrasonic penetration of Vitamin C
6. Anti Acne Mask
7. Moisturiser
8. Sunscreen

Please mind me for not having any photos taken during the entire course of the treatment because I was pangseh-ed by my photographer that very morning (tragic story).

Before we start the entire process, I stored my belongings (you know, me and my habit of carrying my entire home with me) in a reasonably sized cabinet located at one corner of the treatment room. It can actually store the number of barang-barang I have, that’s enough to help you visualise how spacious the cabinet actually is. I love cabinets of reasonable size.

Thereafter, I was handed a bouffant cap – so that my hair would not be stained during the process. I lied down on the bed and the professional consultant pulled the blanket over me, exposing only my face.

First thing first, double-cleansing. This step helps to prepare the skin for treatment by removing the dirt and oil from the surface of the skin. The cleansing was accompanied by a tender message on the face. That completely clears any nervousness I had prior to my first ever facial treatment.

Once the foams from the second cleansing were washed away with water, my consultant then brought forward a machine. For a moment, I thought I was at the dentist. The MDX is a minimally invasive procedure used to renew the overall skin tone and texture of the skin. It requires the usage of a special applicator (part of that massive machine I saw), containing an abrasive surface to help gently ‘vacuum’ the other layer of the skin, rejuvenating it during the process. To help you relate to it better, it’s exfoliation.

Once the outer layer of the skin in rejuvenated, it’s time for Ultrasonic Cleansing. With the help of ultrasonic (sound) wave motion, aged surface skin cells are impurities are being removed. Such include the irritating blackheads and whiteheads most of us encountered.

Of course, while ultrasonic is powerful enough, manual extraction of dirt and impurities are still required, just in case the wave did not manage to remove them completely. Although it was done using a relatively sharp tweezer, I am glad that my consultant was so experienced and gentle (yet effective) that I did not actually felt any sharp pain.

“You don’t seem to have much blackheads actually” She said shortly.

Well, could have been due to the IDS products I’ve been using thus far. Effective.

Cleared of the impurities, it’s time to apply some Vitamin C on the pores vacated by the impurities. I mentioned in my previous article that Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant essential in promoting the production of collagen, and collagen helps promote the thickening of the dermis and hence contributing to the strength and flexibility of the skin. The ultrasonic penetration of Vitamin C is done to ensure that the vitamins are optimally absorbed into the skin, achieving the best effect possible.

A herbal-scented anti-acne mask is then being applied onto my face to help soothes the sensitive spot. My consultant then excused herself for the next 15 minutes for the mask to take effect. I continued to lay there, lowkey cursing Jon for not being there to entertain me (sorry mate haha, just adding some banter here). I would really want to see how I look with the cement-coloured semi-solid being applied across my face. Not sure if I am the only one who felt it but there was some minty feeling on my skin as the duration goes.

15 minutes later, she’s back to clear off the mask. I wouldn’t really mind if she came in any later, I was enjoying the smell and the texture of the mask already. Once the mask is off, she helped me to apply the oil-free moisturiser (OM) and the sunscreen (S2) to complete the entire process.

Final verdict: I hadn’t really felt so relaxed since school started so I was enjoying every moment of the treatment! Shiok lah

You can read more about HTT or make an appointment with IDS for a HTT HERE.

Apart from the HTT, IDS also offers other facial treatments such as the Cyro-Therapeutics Treatment (CTT), which is catered to personnel who are troubled by hypersensitive skin issues and Omega Rejuvenate & Renewal if you are looking for some anti-ageing solutions.

The Follow-Up

After the treatment, I was ushered out to the waiting area, where I met my stand-in photographer Huiqi – who kindly offered her service during her lunch break. (Means, yay, some photos to go which this entire chunk of text!) Not long after, I was called for my consultation with Dr Ben.

IDS Consultation with Dr. Ben Yim
Hello doc?: Me consulting Dr Ben Yim

It’s a follow up consultation so Dr Ben was looking at the condition of my skin. My other beauty consultant Cass was like saying, “Your face looks whiter now.”

Of course, those of you who are reading this will be thinking, “Eh, where can ownself say ownself one?”

What about a few weeks later during one of my productions, my AP was telling me how my face look brighter.

The power of IDS and their products.

Guy Trying out Skincare regime with IDS

I know I disappeared from blogging for quite some time because I was jumped to the YouTube bandwagon (thank God I haven’t really jump on the Tiktok bandwagon yet). Gosh, the new WordPress UI looks familiar yet strange, I almost forgot how to write blogs already. But thankfully, I managed to keep myself within the top 40 blogs in Singapore. But if you managed to read this post, then yay, I successfully managed to manoeuvre my way through the slightly new interface.

In this rare update, and hopefully we will be expecting more in the upcoming 3 months because it’s Summer Break! Oh yeah! Didn’t really expect Even as a guy, I will tend to be over-cautious with how I look. I mean, everyone wants to look aesthetically pleasing right? I’ve tried 1001 ways of skincare routine to keep my facial condition in its optimum.

Recently, I get to hear about this aesthetic clinic called IDS and they offered me to hop onto a skincare journey with them! They have two branches, one at Novena and the other at Orchard. Heard a lot of good reviews about it both from online and by mouth, so I decided to give it a go!

I went to the Orchard outlet as it was more accessible and convenient for me. Located at the 2nd level of the International Building (beside Shaw Theatres Lido), the outlet looks very posh, giving a royalty impression.

I was greeted by a group of very polite and friendly consultants. Even though it’s my first time there, I felt very welcomed and there is a feeling of familiarity around. First impression counts and they got it right!

After going the standard procedure of scanning in, temperature taking and filling up forms, the friendly consultant told me to take a seat at the posh waiting area.

front of ids clinic

So Dr Ben Yim is my designated dermatologist. I explained to him that I am troubled with oily and acne-prone skin for the past few years. My face was quite alright that day because it just happened to be ‘good skin day’. But once faced with weather changes and other stress factors like poor work-rest cycle and poor diet choices, it will go haywire again.

GOING BARE: This is the condition of my face on the first day of treatment.

Of course, like many other dermatological clinics, they will help us to take a before and after treatment photo. But then, I also want to keep a record of it, so I got a photo of myself taken right before I went in to see Dr. Ben.

So yes, you can roughly see the condition of my face. There are scars left behind from my previous acne outbreak and it is kind of visible.

Dr Ben then told me about the products that I can use to help with my condition and improve my complexion. And he went on with several acronyms that I was quite puzzled with, but later I realised that those were the ‘code’ for the products. Throughout the consultation, a beauty consultant was stationed alongside me so she could take note of the issues I am facing and also jotting down the doctor’s instruction diligently.

After the quick yet efficient consultation with Dr Ben, I followed my beauty consultant to another room where she explained to me about the prescribed products and taught me how to apply them!

So her name is Cassandra, or Cass I would call her by. Pretty young lady but definitely quite experienced in her trade. She gave me a crash course to IDS products and went through my routine very clearly and patiently.

Note: The following photos are taken 3 months after my first treatment.

IDS Skincare products

IDS C1 Refresher Cleanser

Best for Normal to Oily/Blemish Prone skin, the Refreshing Cleanser has a gentle, pH-balanced formulation that maintain our skin’s natural protective barrier. You can trust it to help remove your makeup and end-of-the-day residue from the pores without excessive dryness. It supports natural skin cell regeneration and soothes irritated skin and reduces redness. In just one wash, you can feel that your skin is thoroughly cleansed.

So, I will use this cleanser to wash my face the first thing after I wake up and of course, before I go to bed. It’s the first step to my morning and night skin routine. Just apply 2 pumps onto the palm of my hand, rub my hands together to form a soft foam and then massage onto damp skin.

Oh did I mention that this product won the Bazaar Beauty Awards in 2014?

IDS PORE FORMULA (PF) – SGD80.25 w/ GST (30ml)

IDS PF Pore Formula

The ultra-light pore refining solution. This synthetic preservative-free product is formulated using the clinic’s proprietary NEULASTIN transcutaneous delivery system, meaning active ingredients are effectively delivered and absorbed into the skin. The PF works to refine pores and reduce blackheads and whiteheads, yet being gentle on the skin.

I would consider this as one of the most ideal products for myself because it suits individuals who have oily and blemish-prone skin. I was told to apply this on the T-zone area of my face – as this area is the most vulnerable to whiteheads and blackheads development. And yes, after using it for a few weeks, I do feel a difference in my skin texture along this area of my face.

C-PLUS (C+) – SGD160.50 w/ GST (30ml)

IDS C+ C-Plus

Also known as ascorbic acid or L-ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant essential in promoting the production of collagen. And, I am sure you guys know how collagen benefits our facial health. Well, in case you don’t, collagen helps to thicken the dermis – a component right below the epidermis of our skin that contributes to the strength and flexibility of the skin. Furthermore, it also promotes melanin production, which helps to lighten hyperpigmentation and brown spots, hence evening out the skin tone and enhance skin radiance.

This very beneficial vitamin does not produce naturally by our human body and the only way to acquire it is through supplements or diet (cue the annoying orange). Therefore, this make Vitamin C application right on your facial skin all the more important.

The C+ serum can be (and should be) applied to all skin types. IDS’ formulates their Vitamin C serum together with Nobel Prize ‘Fullerenes’ and Tocopheryl to improve its antioxidant action and promote strong collagen stimulation. The sum to the equation is a ‘wrinkle-free’ and a significantly brighter skin!

BLEMISH CLEAR (BC) – SGD73.83 w/GST (30ml)

IDS BC Blemish Clear

Having concerns over your active and inflamed pimples? The BC is your answer!

As the name suggests, the BC can help to treat inflamed blemishes and whiteheads effectively, and at the same time, lighten old blemish marks. Dr. Ben heard me loud and clear. My blemish issue is quite evident and one reason why I have to put on a thicker foundation so as to cover it seamlessly. This product is a legitimate ‘life-saver’. If I were to recreate Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, then BC will stem its position right alongside my Psychological Needs.

It is effective in clearing active and inflamed pimples, and also help prevents new breakout from occuring. Furthermore, it stimulates cellular activity and aid in cell regeneration by regulating sebum production.

SPOT CONTROL (SC) – SGD30.50 w/GST (10ml)

IDS SC Spot Control

My favourite and most essential product, hands down. And one of the key items in my Everyday Carry (EDC).

This tiny yet powerful bottle of fast-acting formula helps to rapidly minimise the appearance of breakouts, while reducing inflammation to soothe and heal the skin in the process. While BC promotes and regulates sebum production, the SC further inhibits excessive sebum secretion, giving the skin an optical state of balance.

So how does it actually work? Being anti-bacterial, the BC helps to kill the harmful bacteria associated with blemishes. When you remove the main cause of your main problem, that basically leaves you with not much problem, and I love that.

Although I was told to apply it whenever I have outbreaks, but it is important to self-note not to use it on broken or inflamed skin. While it’s very effective, I need to keep remind myself not to use it excessively. One reason is that it’s not cheap but the key reason is that excessive usage may result in dryness, peeling, and/or irritation.

There is no question about it being awarded the Editors’ Choice for Best Face Saver Acne/Blemish Treatment at the Beauty & Wellness Awards 2018 organised by Beauty It is simply the best.

IDS S2 Non-Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++

The perfect finish to a morning/start of the day skincare routine, given that the nature of my job is to be exposed to the sun most of the time.

Approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation, the S2 is a chemical-free, ultra-lightweight daily skin protector that protects the skin from 99% of UV radiations and blocks more than 35% of blue light (or High Energy Visible Light, HEVL). In additionally, the sustainably produced Squalane provides natural moisturisation which contributes to the anti-ageing benefits.

Even if you are someone who sweats a lot, or a content producer like myself who often have to parkour all over the place to get the best shots, fret not. The S2 is proven to be sweat-proof and has 40-min water resistance.

Probably providing the best of both worlds, apart from its prevention benefits, the S2 also contributes to your wellness, by boosting your anti-oxidant activity by as much as 200%.

FACIAL SCRUB (FS) – SGD66.34 w/ GST (50ml)

IDS FS Facial Scrub

How can a facial routine be considered complete if facial scrub is not being added?

Exfoliation of our skin helps to remove the dead cells that built up on the layers of our skin, and by removing them, it helps to give us a squeaky clean skin that is free from dirt, oil, and sweat. Furthermore, it helps to remove dark patches and acne scars — which is exactly my problem, and provide our facial skin with a new radiant glow!

The IDS’ FS contains ultra-fine crystals that do exactly what it has been tasked to do — to effectively exfoliate dead skin cells and speed up the process of skin turnover. It is especially useful when you are suffering from oily and/or blemish-prone skin like myself. By clearing out the impurities on our skin and absorbing the excess oil, it then leaves us with a more radiant and an evenly toned face, and inhibits the growth of p-acne.

A-PLUS (A+) – SGD160.50 w/GST (30ml)

Now for the more anti-aging part to the entire skincare routine. Introducing Vitamin A, the vitamin vital to cell growth. So once you are done with exfoliating, apply a little of the A+ to help and boost cellular turnover without irritation, hence reducing the fine lines and any wrinkles growing on the face.

Formulated together with another potent anti-oxidant called Niacinamide, A+ provide anti-inflammatory effect, lightening blemish marks, and thus resulting in a brighter and clearer complexion.

RECOVERY SERUM (RS) – SGD85.60 w/GST (30ml)

I was told to pair my A+ together with the RS so as to achieve a better effect in combating skin irritation. The enhanced serum helps improve and stabilise skin immunity and capillary integrity, and also reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improves skin tone in the process.

IDS RS Recovery Serum

My routine was quite simple, nothing short of the routine I was following previously.

MORINING ROUTINE: C1 –> PF –> C+ –> BC –> SC (if needed) –> S2

NIGHT ROUTINE: C1 –> SC –> PF –> C+ –> BC –> A+ w/ RS

If you also want to know more about your skin, feel free to visit their website HERE or if you are interested in buying their products (or check out other products), they have an e-shop too!

As this is a part of my skincare journey with IDS, do look forward to the next installment to this series where I’ll be updating on my skin condition and my follow-up visit at the clinic!

Don’t Make These Post-Exercise Mistakes

The gyms are finally reopening. Spin classes are already being scheduled. Yes, we can go back to working out in our favourite fitness centers again and it feels great. At the same time, it’s important to practice social distancing protocols as mandated by the government.

While many of us are enthusiastic about returning to a gym environment again to shed those “quarantine gains”, many of us might commit some post-exercise recovery mistakes in our excitement.

Which may result in actually hurting our weight loss efforts, and likely to get us injured. Which is why we need to avoid these mistakes, and the first step to correcting mistakes is to identify them.

What are the common post-exercise recovery mistakes?

Not cooling down enough

Rushing to finish a workout is not a good thing. We need to give our body enough time to recover. Some people – particularly those who squeeze in their workout sessions during lunch breaks – actually even skip the cooldown part of their workout and head straight to the shower.

Our temperature rises and blood vessels open up more during physical activities (running, exercising, etc.) and cool-down exercises help get them back to their normal state. Not giving your muscles enough time to cool down will cause blood to pool in your body’s lower extremities.

Your blood won’t have as much pressure for it to be pumped back to your heart and your brain. Use a fitness tracker to check your heart rate, which should be around 60-80 before you stop your workout.

Too much sports drinks

Staying hydrated after working out is hands down – very important. But reaching for that bottle of sports drink during and post workout isn’t exactly the best option.

Sports drinks actually contain carbohydrates and calories which athletes need in order to power through intense training sessions or events. So unless you are training for a marathon or just completed a really tough workout that lasted more than an hour, you are actually taking in more calories than you burned by reaching for a sports drink after working out.

Stick to plain water to rehydrate. You can also add a tiny pinch of salt in your drinking water to replenish electrolytes after your gym session or cycle class, and keep the sports drinks at a minimum. A recommended amount is a mouthful of isotonic sports drink for every 15 minutes of hard exercise.

Not eating after working out

Or more specifically, waiting too long after a workout to eat your next meal. Refueling your body after a workout session is important for recovery. Not only do you need to replenish the energy you used, you need to eat so your body can repair the micro tears in your muscles caused by exercise.

Get carbohydrates and proteins within two hours of your workout. Sooner, if you just did a really intense session that lasted for an hour or so. Carbohydrates replenish your energy stores, protein helps with muscle recovery and strength. Don’t wait too long to get your post-workout meal.

Scheduling another training session the next day

Contrary to popular belief you don’t have to pump iron or sweat through a 90-minute cycle class every day to be healthy. There is such a thing as overtraining and even star athletes understand the importance of incorporating rest days in their training sessions.

If you do not set a time for recovery, your muscles will not get the chance to heal. If muscles don’t get to heal, it doesn’t get stronger. That’s why working out every day might defeat the purpose of building strength and toning up muscles.

Instead, switch up intense workout sessions with lighter activities. Go for long walks or do stretching exercises the next day so you can keep a healthy blood flow to those sore muscles. If you must do active recovery exercises, avoid using the same muscles from your tough workouts.

Not getting a post workout massage

Getting a massage after working out is helpful in reducing muscle soreness and pain. It is also a great way to relax after an intense workout session, and helps a lot in easing anxiety and stress. Now, not all gyms offer post workout massage services and it can be a bit of a hassle to squeeze in a session with a massage therapist after your workout. Also, social distancing rules are still in effect, so doing a self-massage after your workout is the best option.

Using sports recovery devices like a massage gun is a good way to ease those post workout pains and soreness. These devices use percussive force to drive vibrations deep into muscle tissue. These breaks down the lactic acid build up in the muscles which minimize inflammation and pain.

Massage guns are very portable and can easily fit in your gym bag. You can take it out after working out to ease post-exercise inflammation or use it during your workout between reps to keep your muscles warmed up and ready.

There you have it. Some of the most common post exercise mistakes that many of us make. Keep in mind that what we do after working out is as important as the actual workout itself. And we need to make sure what we do outside the gym is not putting all of our hard work to waste.

What other post-exercise mistakes do you know about? Sound off in the comments and let’s discuss!

Getting the Perfect Hair Cut at YOON Salon Over the Weekend

As we head into the weekend, I know some of you ladies (and gentlemen, of course) are looking to refresh your look ahead for the fourth quarter of this year. Don’t think I don’t know that some of y’all transform your crowning glory as if it has four seasons. So yes, if you are tired of your current post-circuit breaker look, it is time to make use of this weekend to do something about it.

Oh, and as usual, I have lobang. I have lobang for everything. I mean, that’s one reason why is still present despite the over-saturation of content in today’s internet and social media world.

YOON SALON: A Salon With Experience

While there are a lot of salons across the island, it is very difficult to find one that can really cater to your personal needs. A lot of the salons do not offer consultation services before starting your cut or treatment, so you are unsure of what kind of style is really suitable for your face shape. Some looks might look nice on others but you might look terrible sporting a replica of that particular look. As much as possible, I always rely on professional and dedicated hairstylists for advice so that I don’t ‘spoil’ my looks. (Very bhb, I know hehe)

Visiting Yoon Salon

YOON Salon has emerged as a leader in the hair service scene in Singapore. With a team of highly experienced stylists, it is definitely a go-to for anyone who is looking to get their tresses done.

They offer a large range of services including their Premium Hair Cut, Colouring or Creative Colouring for your tresses, Perming, Rebonding and Creative Hair Shaping.

For the Premium Hair Cut, the professional hairstylist will be in consultation with you regarding the kind of hairstyle you are suitable for. The stylist will personally assess the shape of your face – be it square, oval, diamond, long, or heart shaped before recommending the style that best suits you. Once you have settled on the desired style you want, the experts will unleash their handicraft and utilise their vast range of techniques such as wedge, graduated, blunt and layered cuts to make sure you received the best type of cuts for your preferred look. Fret not, you will receive the best technique for your chosen cut from the most experienced team you could ever find.

If you are looking to stand out in the crowd, go for the Premium Hair Colouring service. There is a large variety of colours available, all of which are rich and long-lasting and the ability to protect, strengthen and replenish your locks. The  dedicated professional assigned to you will choose the best colour mixture for your look to ensure that the tresses are of a natural, high-quality and vibrant shade.

Of course if you are looking for multi-tone, highlighting, ombre and balayage type of colouring for your crowning glory, go for their Premium Creative Hair Colouring services. You would not need to worry about how negative effects colour dying will do to your tresses because the salon uses high quality dyes that will lock in moisture and colour, ensuring that the texture of your strands are well protected and that the dyes have a long lasting effect.

For those of you who are looking to styling your tresses to another level, where a basic cut or colour are not sufficient for you, the Premium Hair Perming and Rebonding services are other options you would not hesitate to consider. The perming service offered here allows you to sport the Korean C-curl or S-curl and Wave look, should you be interested to look like your favourite K-pop/K-drama idol. I know some people had the experience at other salons where their perms ended up looking fake and unnatural, the results you get from this place might surprise you – in a good way. With the help of an oxidising lotion, your perm will be strengthened, hence resulting in long lasting and smooth curls. The technology and methods adopted by the studio are set to make your perm look soft and natural, resulting in smoother and bouncier curls at the end of the treatment.

Their rebonding services also result in a similar effect. While preventing your strands from breakage, your locks will feel much more moisturised and nourished. If you are looking to achieve a silky, shiny and sleek crowning glory that is worthy of its name at the end of your rebonding, the excellent treatment provided here has the ability to meet your requirements.

YOON SALON: Combating Problematic Tresses

Yoon Salon provides solutions to hair issues

Not only can you get the perfect cut for your tresses over the weekend or if you’re lucky, the long weekend, but those with any concerns for their locks will be pleased to hear that this is also one of the best places to get treatment for your locks done. The studio offers Hair Defrizzing Treatment that helps with defrizzing, repairing, and strengthening. Using the professional-grade treatment, it will help to repair, smoothen, and strengthen the cuticles in your strands. In order to ensure that your treatment has a long-lasting effect, the experts at the studio will be providing you with four weekly boosters for your locks. At the end of the day, your strands will achieve a silky, glossy and strong texture that many will envy.

As someone who has been troubled by scalp issues, consider looking into their Hair Regrowth Treatment. Whether you are suffering from oily, dry, sensitive or loss of tresses due to scalp issues, the professionals at the studio will be able to assist you in any way possible, ensuring safe procedure with visible results. When you first embark on the treatment, the professional stylist will conduct a thorough exfoliation on your crown, focusing on your follicles. This will help rid your scalp of any build up of dead skin cells and reduce the congestion that contributes to your scalp issues. Next, to hydrate, balance, and encourage growth of your strands, a PDT treatment will then be done on your scalp. Your gentle yet skilful professionals will massage your head to stimulate the lymphatic tissues and promote circulation. Lastly, you will have to return to the salon for weekly scalp boosters for four weeks to ensure that the treatment achieves an enduring effect.

So, over this weekend, whether you are looking to sport a new look or to fix your hair or scalp issues, do make a reservation via their website or give them a call.

And the most important thing to note is that they are currently offering a 1 time session at a special rate of S$28! So, what are you waiting for?

Make a trip down to one of their three outlets in town:

Yoon Salon outlets across Singapore

All three outlets are open from 1100hrs to 2100hrs from Monday through to Sunday.

Eddy Chua holding on to Lao Xie Zhen Ginseng Essence

Circuit Breaker came, Circuit Breaker went. While many see this as a moment to take a break, I saw it as a moment of faith for our studios. We were just about to get started and COVID-19 hits us. It took a while to accept the new norm and we started getting to work almost immediately. The idea of N GOES LIVE was conceptualised and I continued to work 7 days a week despite we were undergoing a lockdown.

Since the debut of N GOES LIVE somewhere in April, I’ve been working tirelessly and endlessly on production – ensuring we have contents every day and the programme goes smooth every time. The stress about going live every day is that you have to be always ready and prepared because there’s no second take. What’s out is out to the public. Even during the second part of N GOES LIVE when we did a shake-up of the original programme and reduced its frequency, I was still working day and night to present the best show for our audiences.

Then, Circuit Breaker became a thing of the past, Phase 1 kicked in. The good thing is film companies like ours are allowed to resume operation. The hustings never stop. I had to attend Zoom meetings with the other members of the Singapore Association of Motion Picture Professionals and setting out all the safe distancing measures required for CTRL N to resume operations. There were posters designed and directive drafted. Everything completed within 2 weeks. June 2, I went back to office and resume work from there. Phase 2 came in quite quickly enough and we were gearing up for the elections. I was glad that I was contracted to Mediacorp as a freelancer during this period. At least I could still earn money while getting our studio ready to resume our pre-COVID plans.

Elections was another busy period for me. On one hand, I had to do the programming for our live shows, and on the other hand, I have to prepare the videos ahead of the projected election dates. While N GOES LIVE ended by the end of June, the work load did not lessen. Those who followed me on my Instagram account would know, I was working late into the night especially after the Writ of Election was issued on 23 June. From then on, till the day after election on 11 July, I was literally on a zombie mode. That means, I was basically working 24/7, working of graphic animation that I had never tried before. (Well, thank God those graphics came out rather well!)

Despite the heavy workload, I seem to still live my life normally. Well, seems.

Friends have been asking me how I managed to combat fatigue despite the long hours. Well, while one reason being how coffee plays the important role in fueling me every day. There are other factors as well.

You are probably going to say cats because of the amount of videos of cats that I’ve been posting lately on Instagram – so much so that I’d even have TWO highlights dedicating to them.

Alright, cats play a very important part of my life and my strategy to combat fatigue. I’d enjoy mingling with my two neighbourhood cats every time when I returned home from work – whether it’s at 2300HRS, 0300HRS or 0800HRS. Playing with cats really do help me with my mood. Too bad because of health reasons I could not keep a cat at home, if not, I would gladly do so. It’s safe to assume that cats play an integral part of my life.

Coffee and cats alone would not be enough to see me through this period – even up till now. Tonic and replenishment is what I looked to to reset me every day. Something that’s more organic and less toxic to the body. Yes, please refrain from having too much caffeine intake.

Eddy Chua drinking Lao Xie Zhen Premium Ginseng Essence

I was introduced to Hao Yi Kang’s Lao Xie Zhen Premium Ginseng Essence during this period. I couldn’t be more thankful for it.

When I first get to know about Ginseng Essence, I was like ‘I heard of Chicken Essence but what is Ginseng Essence? Does it works the same as Chicken Essence?’ I give it a try, nevertheless, because anything that has the potential of helping me getting through this period worth a try.

When I took my first sip of the Lao Xie Zhen Premium Ginseng Essence, I was expecting the strong, bitter taste from the usual ginseng. I was wrong. I was surprised how even though it contains the combination of the White and American Ginseng, the aftertaste was mild and proved not too strong for consumption. I was satisfied. I made a point to drink it every night, while I am in the midst of production planning or video editing.

Within a few days, I felt the effect. I felt more concentrated, more energized. Well, I guess that is how top grade White Ginseng and American Ginseng hailing all the way from Changbai Mountain does to you. Every bottle of Lao Xie Zhen Premium Ginseng Essence is rich in Ginsenosides, containing up to 400mg of the natural pharmacological component found uniquely to the Ginseng species.

Product shot of Lao Xie Zhen Premium Ginseng Essence

On further read up, I realised that Ginseng is capable in helping to combat fatigue and thus, improving concentration and focus. Those are the two major issues that I am particular of when it comes to my productivity. Furthermore, for health conscious and the elderlies, this has anti-inflammatory effects, hence helping to protect the liver functions, strengthens immune system, lower blood sugar and provides antioxidant protection.

So much goodness in just a small bottle! I guess I have uncovered the mystery to why I still have the energy to get by my days even with my long working hours. I really recommend you guys to try it too, whether you are working adult or students rushing your assignments and projects!

With that I shall sign off for this month. Ok, I’ll promise to write more often on this site from now on. I really do miss writing, to be honest. Maybe the next post , I’ll share more about what I’ve done during Circuit Breaker!

See yall and remember to be socially responsible. Do not spread rumours regarding COVID-19 and get your updates via the official channels such us GOV.SG portal or it’s Telegram channel.

3 Reasons Why You Should Charter A Yacht

When most people think of yachts, several terms come to their mind: luxury, fun, ocean, maintenance, and most importantly, EXPENSIVE. However, nowadays, thanks to companies like The Epicurean State, yacht charters have become way more accessible, making it much easier for people to enjoy a luxurious day on the waters, without all of the expenses and hassles of owning a yacht.

L45. why charter a yacht.

1. Yachts are Expensive

There are tons and tons of expenses that come along with owning a yacht. First and foremost, buying a yacht will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Obviously, yachts are not cheap (and a cheap yacht is a dangerous yacht!) and of course, the up-front payment is no joke. After this, the expenses do not stop. There is constant maintenance, petrol, crew and storage. The list goes on and on, and the cycle continues.

When you rent a yacht, you only pay for the trips you go on – so no up-front costs, no maintenance costs, no storage….you get the picture.

2. There are so many different yachts for the different occasions

As mentioned in the previous post, different occasions call for different boats. After investing so much money and time into buying a yacht, it stands to reason that you should use that one yacht as often as possible.

Renting a yacht means you can choose a different one for any occasion! The possibilies and options are endless, and if you do more than one trip, you get a totally different experience each time!

3. Going yachting takes a lot of planning and organizing

Whenever you plan a trip on your yacht, there are several factors that go into the planning: making sure the weather is fine, plan an itinerary, check that the yacht has been maintained properly and has petrol, plan for food, find a crew or captain (if you’re not licensed), and this is to just to name a few.

In conclusion, if you are planning to rent a yacht, companies like The Epicurean State do all of this for you! All you need to do is select the dates, the yacht, and the destination, and we can come up with an itinerary and sort out all the other problems for you! It’s a worry free and totally simple way to get yourself on a yacht and enjoy for the day.
